To T. H. Huxley   10 September [1860]1

Down Bromley Kent

Sept 10th

My dear Huxley

I send by this Post a Review by Asa Gray, so good that I shd. like you to see it;2 I must beg for its return. I want to ask, also, your opinion about getting it reprinted in England. I thought of sending it to Editor of Annals & Mag. of N. Hist (in which two hostile Reviews have appeared)3 (although I suppose the Annals have very small circulation) & asking them in spirit of fair play to print this, with Asa Gray’s name, which I will take responsibility of adding.—4 Also, as it is long, I would offer to pay expences.—

It is very good in addition as bringing in Pictet so largely.5 Tell me briefly what you think.—

What an astonishing expedition this of Hooker’s to Syria.—   God knows whether it is wise.—

How are you & all yours? I hope you are not working too hard. For Heavens Sake, think that you may become such a beast as I am.— How goes on the Nat. Hist. Review?—6 Talking of Reviews I damned with a good grace the Review in Athenæum on Tyndall with a mean scurvy allusion to you.—7 It is disgraceful about Tyndall,—in fact doubting his veracity.—

I am very tired, very stomachy & hate nearly the whole world. so good night, & take care of your digestion which means Brain—

My dear fellow | Ever yours | C. Darwin

Etty slowly, very slowly, but steadily improves., & we are thinking of sea-side for her & us all.—
