I am very sorry to trouble you, but I write a line to say that I have not received receipts for 220 transmitted on the 20th for Palæont. Socy. for years. 1858 & 18593

The cover associated with this letter was addressed to ‘J. S. Bowerbank Esqe, 3 Highbury Lane, Islington, London’. Bowerbank was honorary secretary of the Palaeontographical Society, which he had founded in 1847.

The year is given by an entry in CD’s Account book (Down House MS) recording the payment mentioned in the letter (see n. 3, below).

From entries in CD’s Account book (Down House MS), it appears that CD had for two years neglected to pay his annual subscription of £1 1s. to the Palaeontographical Society. An entry dated 20 March 1859 indicates that CD made a payment of £2 2s for 1858 and 1859. The sum was subsequently changed to read £3 3s., and CD added: ‘& for 1857’. CD had joined the Palaeontographical Society in 1850 after arrangements had been made for the society to publish Fossil Cirripedia (1851).
