To J. D. Hooker 18 [May 1858]1
Down. Bromley Kent
18th
My dear Hooker
I am in truth delighted at the thought of your coming here.2 Cannot Mrs. Hooker come also; it would be very nice? I am much obliged for her note.
For one sole reason, Sat. 29th. would be better; viz that I had intended staying in London for work till Saturday morning; but then I shall be sure to be knocked up, so that I shall return home on Friday, for I would not miss your first evening on any account.—
Now pray mind & speak the truth to me at Club & if you are not sure that 29th will suit equally well, let me go home on Friday
Ever yours | C. Darwin
There will be now no occasion to meet you at Club at 5 oclock.
The Omnibus meets the Train at Beckenham leaving London Bridge at 4o. 40’.—
I will send you & Mrs. Hooker back on Monday by carriage so as to escape horrid Omnibus Journey—
There is not least hurry in world about my M.S. I would rather you leave it till you feel disengaged, if that time ever comes to you.—
