Baxter was a dispensing chemist in Bromley, Kent. He is listed in the Post Office directory of the six home counties (1845) as also running an Italian warehouse for fancy goods. His son William Walmisly Baxter seems to have taken over the business in the 1850s.
The year is inferred from an entry in CD’s Account book that may be the transaction discussed in the letter (see n. 3, below).
There is an entry under ‘Science’ in CD’s Classed account book (Down House MS) dated 7 December 1847 that reads: ‘Baxter bottles etc —13 6’. Only one other similar entry has been found, dated 12 February 1848, recording payment for bottles and pill boxes.
