The year range is established from the fact that the Darwins moved to Down in September 1842 (Correspondence vol. 2, Appendix II). William Baxter and his son William Walmisley Baxter of Bromley, Kent, were CD’s regular chemists.
Spirits of wine were used as a preservative for animal and plant specimens.
