On 8 October 1881, CD recorded a payment of £11 5s. to ‘Ffinden’ in his Account books–banking account (Down House MS). The payment was for the Coal and Clothing Club (see n. 2, below).
The Down Coal and Clothing Club was a local charity that supplied parishioners with cheap coal and clothes in exchange for regular savings; Ffinden, the vicar of Down, ran the club. On 8 October 1881, CD recorded a payment of £5 5s. to the ‘Coal Club’ in his Account books–classed accounts (Down House MS).
