Dear Sir

Herewith we post you a set of illustrations to “Expression of the Emotions”, whereon we have marked with a X in pencil those figures which we think could be improved in a future edition, if you could furnish us with the materials to make fresh negatives from.1

The cost of making such new negatives and substituting them for the existing ones would be 7/6 for each figure so altered.

It would take a few days to re-arrange the plates; therefore, in the event of a new edition being required, with these alterations, the materials for them should be sent to us in good time.— There need not be any actual expense incurred until it is certain that more prints will be wanted.

We are dear Sir | Your faithful | B. J. Edwards & Coy.

Footnotes

The enclosure has not been found. Edwards improved the heliotype reproductions of photographs that were used for the third German edition of Expression (Carus trans. 1877b); see letter to John Murray, 15 November 1876. A second English edition of Expression was not produced in CD’s lifetime.
