Down, Farnborough, Kent,

Wednesday

My dear Sir,

As I have not heard from you I suppose you do not want Von Buch’s Travels, so I send Hopkins’ solus—2 please keep it as long as you want & return it directed to me at the Athenaeum Club.— If the Drawer’s happen to be ready the carrier shall take them.3

Ever yours, C. Darwin

Footnotes

The date is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter to Daniel Sharpe, [1 November 1846] (Correspondence vol. 3). The first Wednesday after 1 November 1846 was 4 November.
CD had offered to lend Sharpe his copy of Christian Leopold von Buch’s Travels through Norway and Lapland (Buch 1813; see Correspondence vol. 3, letter to Daniel Sharpe, [1 November 1846]); CD’s annotated copy of Buch 1813 is in the Darwin Library–CUL (see Marginalia 1: 90). Sharpe presented a paper on slaty cleavage to the Geological Society of London on 2 December 1846; in it he referred to three publications by William Hopkins (D. Sharpe 1846, p. 100); the paper mentioned by CD was probably Hopkins’s researches in physical geology (Hopkins 1835).
CD is probably referring to drawers containing the Falkland Island shells that he collected during the Beagle voyage; these had been described by Sharpe and John Morris in a paper presented to the Geological Society on 25 March 1846 (Morris and Sharpe 1846).
