John William Salter


Geologist and palaeontologist. Apprenticed to James de Carle Sowerby in 1835. Assistant to Adam Sedgwick, 1842–6. Assistant to Edward Forbes on the Geological Survey of Great Britain, 1846; palaeontologist to the survey, 1854–63, where his duties included the preparation of specimens for exhibition in the Museum of Practical Geology.
