American botanist and field naturalist. Collected plants extensively in the southern states. Worked on his homestead farm, 1843–55. Assistant geologist and naturalist, Texas Geological Survey, 1860–1. Chief examiner, statistical department, United States Sanitary Commission, 1862–5. State geologist, Texas, 1865–7 and 1874–7.
