James Dwight Dana
American geologist and zoologist . Naturalist with the United States expedition to the Pacific, 1838–42; wrote reports on the geology, zoophytes, and Crustacea. One of the editors of the American Journal of Science and Arts from 1840. Professor of natural history, Yale University, 1856–64; professor of geology and mineralogy, 1864–90. Foreign member, Royal Society of London, 1884.
