Philologist and editor. BA, Cambridge, 1846. Called to the bar, 1849. Honorary secretary of the Philological Society, 1853–1910; laid the foundations for the Oxford English dictionary. Involved in founding the Working Men’s College, 1854. Founded a series of literary and philological societies.
