From William Aitchison to George Cupples   25 June 1869

Linhope

25th June | 1869

Dear Sir

In reply to yours of the 23d I have to inform you I have nothing on my Hill Farms but Sheep of the Cheviot Breed—

It was at the time of Castration I gave you the number of Lambs I had on my Penchrise Farm & now add the numbers I had at that time on this Farm of Linhope—1

Scores Ends
1868 of Ewe Lambs 33.0
of Tup Do. 30.8
Total 63.8
1869 of Ewe Lambs 30.3
of Tup Do. 29.7
Total— 59.10

I observe I have sold at the time of Castration 305 Lamb skins from Penchrise & from this Farm at that time 156 Skins—

The above added gives you the total number of Births but not of each Sex, which I fear you will not can procure

I have not yet received a statement of the Lamb Skins sold from my Farms this year—

I should think Mr Elliot Esqre, Hyndhope by Jedburgh a likely person to apply to for information—2 He is an extensive & distinguished Farmer.

I am | Yr’s faithfully | Wm Aitchison

For Aitchison’s earlier returns, see the letter from William Aitchison to George Cupples, 16 June 1869. As in that letter, Aitchison gave the figures here in a base twenty notation, and Cupples translated them in pencil (see letter from William Aitchison to George Cupples, 16 June 1869 and n. 3).
See letter from Robert Elliot to George Cupples, 4 June 1869, n. 10. Thomas Elliot has not been further identified. [Thomas Elliot farmed at Hindhope, Oxnam, Roxburghshire. Added January 2020.]
