Darwin Correspondence Project

To J. J. Weir   14 February [1876]1

Down, Beckenham, Kent.

Febr 14.

My dear Sir

I find by dearly-bought experience that such an exertion as going to Crystal Palace knocks me (up) for several days, and therefore I cannot accept your kind offer.2 What you tell me about the nesting of birds is new to me.3

My dear Sir | Yours sincerely | Ch. Darwin.

Footnotes

The year has been added by the copyist.
Weir probably offered to accompany CD to the thirteenth annual exhibition of canaries and British and foreign cagebirds at the Crystal Palace; the exhibition took place from 18 to 23 February 1876 (The Times, 18 February 1876, p. 1).
Weir’s letter has not been found and the information on nesting has not been identified.

Summary

Declines invitation to accompany JJW to Crystal Palace.
