I am much obliged for your kind gift of six copies of the “Garden”, with a drawing of myself & a notice of my works.1 This notice is drawn up in the most generous spirit & is highly honourable to me.

Robinson had founded the Garden, a weekly illustrated horticultural magazine, in 1871. CD’s engraved portrait appeared as the frontispiece to the supplement to the issue of 1 January 1876, together with an unsigned account of his botanical publications (Garden 8 (1875): xi–xii).
