To T. M. Hughes   13 March [1873]1

Down, | Beckenham, Kent.

March 13th

My dear Sir

I shall be glad & proud to aid in any way to do honour to the memory of Prof. Sedgwick, whose chair, I have not the least doubt you will most worthily fill.2

My dear Sir | Yours very sincerely | Ch. Darwin

Footnotes

The year is established by the allusion to Hughes’s election to the Woodwardian Professorship of geology, which took place in 1873 (ODNB).
Hughes’s predecessor as Woodwardian Professor of geology at the University of Cambridge, Adam Sedgwick, died in January 1873 (ODNB). No other correspondence between CD and Hughes has been found; CD had supported the candidature of William Boyd Dawkins (letter to W. B. Dawkins, 3 February 1873).
