Darwin Correspondence Project

To J. D. Hooker   [before 7 May 1869]1

With Sclavonic races, (or indeed in any other race as Dutch) is the beard often of a different tint from the hair on the head; & when it differs, is it lighter in tint? or generally reddish?

C. Darwin

Footnotes

The date is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter from J. D. Hooker, 24 June 1869, and by the date of Hooker’s departure for Russia, 7 May 1869 (see L. Huxley ed. 1918, 2: 85; see also letter from J. D. Hooker, 11 March 1869 and n. 4).

Summary

Asks whether in Slavonic races the hair of the beard and head are different colours.
