Darwin Correspondence Project

To W. B. Dawkins   12 April [1871]1

Down. | Beckenham | Kent. S.E.

Ap. 12th

My dear Sir

I see by the Report of the Settle Cave Exploration that funds are wanted, so I have the pleasure to send a cheque for 5£.2

My dear Sir | Yours sincerely | Ch Darwin

Footnotes

The year is established by the mention of CD’s donation to Dawkins (see n. 2, below).
Dawkins was investigating the Craven Caves, which are near Settle, North Yorkshire (see letter from W. B. Dawkins, 8 February 1871 and n. 3). Dawkins read his ‘Report on the results obtained by the Settle Cave Exploration Committee out of Victoria Cave in 1870’ at a meeting of the Royal Anthropological Institute on 3 April 1871 (Dawkins 1871c). CD recorded the donation of £5 to ‘Boyd Dawkins caves’ in his Classed account books (Down House MS).

Summary

Sends contribution of £5 to Settle Cave Exploration Fund.
