The presence of the statement in the Darwin Archive–CUL indicates that Gray sent it to CD; Gray sent the previous year’s statement as well, and may have enclosed it with his letter of 18 July 1866 (see Correspondence vol. 14). CD sent a letter to Gray on 28 February 1867 that has not been found (see letter from Asa Gray, 26 March 1867), and Gray may have included the statement in a letter to CD of early February that also has not been found. For more on the sale of the US edition of Origin, see Correspondence vol. 14, letter from Asa Gray, 7 May 1866 and n. 3.
