Albemarle St

Decr 24

My Dear Sir

Your two parcels of MS. reached me on Saty night with your instructions2   I was very glad to receive them but they arrive just at the beginning of Xmas Holidays & no real work can be got out of the Printers before Thursday next. This will account for a little delay—but proceedings shall be taken in earnest when once begin & we will endeavour to make up for lost time—

Permit me to wish you the Comps of the Season & to remain My Dear Sir | yours very faithfully | John Murray

Ch Darwin Esq

The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter to John Murray, 21 and 22 December [1866].
CD had sent the manuscript of all but the last chapter of Variation, along with instructions about footnotes and page size, and two possible titles (see letter to John Murray, 21 and 22 December [1866]).

Two parcels of MS [of Variation] have arrived. Will proceed with printing immediately after Christmas.
