Kingsley had requested CD’s photograph in a letter to CD of 30 May 1865. CD probably sent the photograph taken by his son William Erasmus Darwin in 1864 (see Correspondence vol. 12, letter from W. E. Darwin, [19 May 1864] and n. 8). This photograph is reproduced as the frontispiece of Correspondence vol. 12. The photograph of Kingsley has not been found in the Darwin Archive–CUL.
