Footnotes

The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter to Asa Gray, 10 September [1860] (Correspondence vol. 8).
CD refers to Trübner and Co. of London.
The August 1860 issue of the Atlantic Monthly contained the second, and final, part of an anonymous review, ‘Darwin on the origin of species’ ([A. Gray] 1860, pp. 229–39). There is an annotated copy of each part in the Darwin Pamphlet Collection–CUL.
The October 1860 issue of the Atlantic Monthly contained ‘Darwin and his reviewers’, the anonymous sequel to the two-part review ([A. Gray] 1860, pp. 406–25; see n. 3 above). There is an annotated copy in the Darwin Pamphlet Collection–CUL. For the attribution of the review and its sequel to Asa Gray, see Correspondence vol. 8, letter to J. D. Hooker, 19 [July 1860] and n. 2. In 1861, Trübner published all three parts of [A. Gray] 1860 as a pamphlet on which Gray’s name appeared as author (A. Gray 1861). There are two copies in the Darwin Pamphlet Collection–CUL; one is lightly annotated.

Summary

Orders one copy of the issue of the Atlantic Monthly for last August (but not worth sending to America for) and two copies of the issue for next October.
