Darwin Correspondence Project

To Henry Norton Shaw, Royal Geographical Society1   16 April [1858]

Down Bromley Kent

Ap. 16th

My dear Sir

I was in London yesterday & only then found at the Athenæum Club, your note with the Diploma of the Geograph. Socy. of Vienna, for which I am much obliged & feel much honoured.—2

My dear Sir | Yours very sincerely | C. Darwin

Shaw was secretary of the Royal Geographical Society, London.
The Kaiserlich-Königliche Geographischen Gesellschaft of Vienna was the second foreign learned society to honour CD. In 1857, the German Academy of Naturalists, or Leopoldina, had elected CD to membership (see Correspondence vol. 6, letter to the Secretary, Academia Caesarea Leopoldino-Carolina Naturae Curiosorum, 8 September [1857]).

Is much obliged and honoured by the Diploma of the Geographical Society of Vienna.
