To John Higgins   28 February [1848]

Down Farnborough Kent

Feb 28th

My dear Sir

I have had a letter from Mr Mason, requesting me as a favour to pay my subscription half-yearly & at the dates of the 16th of Feb. & 16th of August.—1 Would you kindly do this for me.— Though on reflexion, I do not see, how you can earlier than Lady Day & Michaelmas.2 Perhaps you will be so good as to pay as soon as you receive the Rent & then it will be somewhere near the dates requested.

I hope that you will excuse this trouble & believe me, My dear Sir | Yours very faithfully | C. Darwin

You can, if you like keep back 5£ next Lady Day & thus pay as Mr Mason requests.—

Footnotes

1
CD subscribed £5 each year for the support of Beesby School (see CD’s Account Book and Investment Book (Down House MSS)). Henry Payne Mason, rector of Beesby, was presumably responsible for collecting the subscriptions to Beesby School.
2

Summary
