Joseph Lemuel Chester

1821–82

American-born genealogist. Employed as a clerk, journalist, and lecturer in the United States. Appointed aide-de-camp, with military rank of colonel, to the governor of Pennsylvania, 1855. Arrived in England in 1858. Having obtained access to Doctors’ Commons as a researcher in 1862, he collected material illustrating the ancestry of American families. Worked on a genealogy of CD’s family.
