American geologist. BA, Oberlin College, Ohio, 1867. Attended Union Theological Seminary and Oberlin Theological Seminary, 1867–70. Studied science at Yale and Harvard Universities. Professor of natural science, Tabor College, 1871–92; adjunct professor, Beloit College, Wisconsin, 1881–3. Professor of geology and minerology, University of South Dakota, 1892–1903. Assistant geologist to the US Geological Survey, and to geological surveys in Missouri and Minnesota. State geologist of South Dakota. Assistant professor of geology and mineralogy, University of Kansas, 1907–22.
