James Clark Ross
1800–62
Naval officer and polar explorer. Joined the navy in 1812. Discovered the northern magnetic pole in 1831. Employed on the magnetic survey of the United Kingdom, 1835–8. Commander of an expedition to the Antarctic, 1839–43; and of a search expedition for John Franklin (ODNB), 1848–9. Knighted, 1843. FRS 1828.
