John Beddoe

1826–1911

Physician and anthropologist. Began medical practice in Bristol in 1857. Physician, Bristol Royal Infirmary, 1862–73; consulting physician, Bristol Children’s Hospital, 1866–1911. Began active researches on ethnology during an extended European tour prior to setting up practice. An authority on the physical characteristics of living European races. Founder member of the Ethnological Society. President of the Anthropological Society, 1869–70. FRS 1873.
