The year is established by the reference to Henry Parker’s ballot at the Athenaeum Club; Parker was elected a member in March 1874 (Waugh [1888]).
Parker, a fellow of Oriel College, Oxford, was elected a fellow of the Athenaeum Club at a meeting on 16 March (see letter to George Bentham, 9 March [1874], and Waugh [1888]).
