The date is conjectured from the fact that it is the only date on which a payment was made to Jones on a Monday, coinciding with a visit by CD to London. CD was in London from 21 April to 1 May 1866 (Emma Darwin’s diary (DAR 242)). CD’s Classed account books (Down House MS) record a payment to Jones on 23 April 1866, a Monday.
