Countdown to Darwin 2009

The Darwin Correspondence Project website will be counting down to the celebrations with a different quotation from Darwin’s correspondence every day. Wherever possible we will chose quotes that show what Darwin was thinking and writing about 150 years ago to the day, culminating in 2009 with the letters immediately surrounding the publication of Origin.

Among events planned in Cambridge to mark these anniversaries are an international Darwin 2009 academic conference, and exhibitions which will bring together for the first time the major collections of Darwin’s manuscripts, books, and scientific specimens which together form one of the great treasures of Cambridge University. These celebrations of one of its most influential alumni will form a major focus for the University’s larger 800th anniversary celebrations.

Letters and other manuscripts from the Darwin Archive of Cambridge University Library and from Christ’s College, are featured in a major travelling exhibition ‘Darwin’. This exhibition was first shown at the American Museum of Natural History and attracted record-breaking numbers of visitors. Over the next three years it will be moving to:
