direct »Letter 7531 — Murie, James to Darwin, C. R., 2 Mar 1871
Thanks for Descent. He is "driven" from his post. He has homologised the face muscles of cetaceans and man. Although the former do not show expression, the nose and upper lip muscles are highly developed.
direct »Letter 7839a — Darwin, C. R. to Darwin, Francis, [late June 1871]
Has visited Mivart. He seemed to have forgotten CD's argument regarding the formation of the greyhound. Discussed the larynx and the silence of the Cetaceans. If FD mentions any of this to [Marlborough Robert] Pryor, ask him not to mention it to anyone else "as it is perhaps rather a breach of confidence to repeat even to friends private conversation".
direct »Letter 7995 — Darwin, C. R. to Huxley, T. H., 9 Oct [1871]
Asks whether THH has written on affinities of Eocene cetacean Zeuglodon. Wants to cite it in 6th ed. of Origin as in some slight degree an intermediate form, but does not know how far he may venture. Has had more evidence of profound impression of Mivart's book [Genesis of species].
direct »Letter 8005 — Flower, W. H. to Darwin, C. R., 12 Oct 1871
On structure and function of the cetacean larynx.
direct »Letter 8008 — Darwin, C. R. to Flower, W. H., 13 Oct [1871]
Will strike out passage on larynx in cetaceans from his MS [of Origin, 6th ed.].
