 Scottish lawyer and horticulturalist . Practised as a solicitor in Edinburgh from 1834 or earlier. Retired from practice in 1861, when his wife succeeded to the estates of Woodend, Perthshire, and, as a condition of the entail, took the additional name Henry. Established a garden in Edinburgh known for its many rare plants. Collected plants from the Andes, north-western Himalayas, and New Zealand. Interested in plant hybridisation and acclimatisation.
