To W. D. Fox   [31 May 1830]

[Cambridge]

Monday

My dear Fox,

I write these few lines to give you an outline of my plans, to apologise for not having written long enough ago, & lastly to say how very glad I am to hear that my plan of your paying me a visit in Shrewsbury, meets with your approbation.— I shall go up to Town on Friday, or Saturday, stay a few days there, & then on Shrewsbury: from whence I will again write to you.—

Mr. Hope has paid me a visit but went back disgusted at the weather. he wants me to make an expedition to the New Forest.—but I do not think I shall: after I once I get to Shrewsbury the sooner you come the better, the only thing at all likely to interfere is Mr Hope & Eyton1 want me to come an Entomological trip into N. Wales. Cannot you perhaps join us? Think of it.—

Of Course you have heard of the new species of wild Swan, discovered in England, by Mr. Yarrell.2 I have bad stuffed specimen of it, for 10s.— bad as it is, you may think yourself, lucky in getting. Yarrell himself, has pronounced it to be the new sort, so there can be no doubt.—

I have had a letter from old Simpson, & he begs to kindly remembered to you: I am packing up Pulleins birds: I have got for you a dusky Grebe.

I will write again when I have more time. I only send this scrawl that you may know how very happy I am at the thoughts of seeing you at Shrewsbury.— | Dear old Fox | Yours | C. Darwin

Mr Hope has taken P. Podalirius in Shropshire, & seen it several times
