Mr Darwin presents his compliments to the Secretary of the Royal Academy & is much obliged for the honour of the invitation for the Anniversary dinner;1 which honour he is obliged to decline on account of the state of his health.

CD may refer to the banquet held by the Royal Academy of Arts on 29 April 1871 to inaugurate the opening of that year’s Exhibition (The Times, 1 May 1871, p. 6). CD’s invitation has not been found.
