The year is established by the mention of CD’s donation to Dawkins (see n. 2, below).
Dawkins was investigating the Craven Caves, which are near Settle, North Yorkshire (see letter from W. B. Dawkins, 8 February 1871 and n. 3). Dawkins read his ‘Report on the results obtained by the Settle Cave Exploration Committee out of Victoria Cave in 1870’ at a meeting of the Royal Anthropological Institute on 3 April 1871 (Dawkins 1871c). CD recorded the donation of £5 to ‘Boyd Dawkins caves’ in his Classed account books (Down House MS).
