Footnotes

The date is established by the fact that this letter was drafted on the back of the letter from Daniel Oliver, 8 April 1867.
For a draft summary of Nägeli’s letter of 31 March 1867, see Correspondence vol. 24, Supplement. See also the letter to J. D. Hooker, 5 April [1867].
The lecture has not been identified or found in the Darwin Pamphlet Collection–CUL, but see the letter to J. D. Hooker, 5 April [1867], n. 1.
The photograph has not been found in the Darwin Archive–CUL. Nägeli published ten papers in the Sitzungsberichte der königl. bayer. Akademie der Wissenschaften zu München (1866), including three on Hieracium and four on hybridisation. They have not been found in the Darwin Pamphlet Collection–CUL.
Nägeli wished to exchange a set of German and Alpine forms of Hieracium for a set of British forms; CD had written to Joseph Dalton Hooker for the name of someone wishing to make the exchange (letter to J. D. Hooker, 5 April [1867]), and in Hooker’s absence CD’s letter was answered by Daniel Oliver (letter from Daniel Oliver, 8 April 1867).
CD may have offered to send a copy of the fourth edition of Origin, which was published in 1866.
