The date range is established by the reference to Descent, which was published in 1871, and by CD’s death in 1882.
Miss Fenwick has not been identified, although CD corresponded with John George Fenwick in March 1876 (Correspondence vol. 24, letter from J. G. Fenwick, 17 March 1876, and letter to J. G. Fenwick, 19 March 1876).
