My dear Sir

I write a single line to say that your note & enclosure have forwarded to me, here. & that I have written to Mr Landsborough2 today to tell him the dried specimen was just what I wanted if he could procure me some more in spirits. I have been & am very unwell, so will write no more, except to thank you much for all your kindness.

Believe me | Yours very truly & obliged | C. Darwin

Footnotes

The conjectured date is based on CD’s visit to Shrewsbury at this time (‘Journal’; Correspondence vol. 4, Appendix I). This was also a period during which he was collecting cirripede specimens from numerous correspondents.
Possibly David Landsborough, Scottish naturalist who was studying the seashore and who later published works on seaweeds and corallines.
