Darwin Correspondence Project

To W. E. Darwin   15 March [1871]

Thanks for letter— it is splendid— pray thank Dr. De Ch cordially for me.1 He evidently belongs to that rare species, a downright good observer. I shall use almost all his letter, of course giving no names.—2 The facts are capital & very curious.— I can quite believe about rubbing thumb & finger, though that does not at present concern me much.—

C.D

I have got many facts about Savages shrugging shoulders.—3

March 15.

Footnotes

CD refers to answers received to his Queries on expression. Question 13 was ‘When a man wishes to shew that he cannot prevent something being done or cannot himself do something does he shrug his shoulders?’ (see Correspondence vol. 19, Appendix VII).
