I am sorry to hear of all your troubles.1 As I do not live in London & very rarely see any scientific men, & as my health is very weak it is impossible for me to organise a subscription. But I beg leave to enclose a P.O for 5£, which I shd. subscribe, if there be a subscription2

No letter from Krefft to which this might be a reply has been found. In 1874, Krefft had lost his job as curator and secretary of the Australian Museum, Sydney, and failed to find further employment; see Correspondence vol. 22, letter from Gerard Krefft, 22 October 1874 and nn. 1 and 6.
CD recorded a payment of £5 under the heading ‘Krefft charity’ on 6 December 1876 in his Account books–cash account (Down House MS).
