To G. G. Stokes   21 April [1876]1

Down, | Beckenham, Kent. | Railway Station | Orpington. S.E.R.

Ap. 21

My dear Sir

I am much obliged for your letter of the. 14th.—2 I have now received Mr L. Tait’s paper & have the awful job of returning it & writing to him.3 It is a good lesson which will last for my life; but as I knew nothing about Nepenthes & did not feel sure that his paper was rubbish with much doubt I thought that I was not justified in refusing to send it to the Royal Soc, but it is now too clear that I shd. have been fully justified.

Pray believe me | yours sincerely | Charles Darwin

Footnotes

The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter from G. G. Stokes, 14 April 1876.
Lawson Tait’s paper on Nepenthes (the tropical pitcher-plant) was submitted by CD to the Royal Society of London in 1875. It was rejected for reading before the society; see letter from G. G. Stokes, 14 April 1876 and n. 1.

Summary

The Society’s rejection of R. L. Tait’s paper on Nepenthes is a lesson which will last CD for his life. It is clear that he should not have sent it.
