My dear Sir
I am much obliged for your letter of the. 14th.—2 I have now received Mr L. Tait’s paper & have the awful job of returning it & writing to him.3 It is a good lesson which will last for my life; but as I knew nothing about Nepenthes & did not feel sure that his paper was rubbish with much doubt I thought that I was not justified in refusing to send it to the Royal Soc, but it is now too clear that I shd. have been fully justified.

Summary
The Society’s rejection of R. L. Tait’s paper on Nepenthes is a lesson which will last CD for his life. It is clear that he should not have sent it.
